Engraving showing two members of the British Arctic Expedition of 1875-1876 checking the thermometers used at their Winter Quarters. In 1875 the British Admiralty sent Captain George Nares with two ships, HMS Alert & HMS Discovery, to make an attempt to reach the North Pole via Smith Sound. The attempt was unsuccessful, but a new furthest North record was set and the coasts of Greenland and Ellesmere Island charted. Scientific observations were taken by the crews of both ships; Discovery had winter quarters at Lady Franklin Bay, whilst Alert wintered 50 miles away at Floeberg Beach.
