Photographic portrait of Joseph Chamberlain (1836-1914). Leader of the Liberal Unionists, he formed an alliance with the Conservative government in 1886 & was given responsibility for British policy during the Boer War. A strong social reformer, he was also an Imperialist. His tariff reforms, promoting the preferential treatment of colonial imports split the party with the pro-free trade Liberal party winning the 1906 general election.
