George, Duke of Kent (1902-1942), fourth son of George V & Queen Mary. Despite a military education, he became the first member of the Royal family to work for the Civil Service. In 1938, he married Princess Marina of Greece with whom he had three children. Often considered the most intelligent of George V’s children, the outbreak of World War II prevented him from taking up the post of Governor-General of Australia. He was tragically killed on active service, when his Sunderland boat plane, en route to Iceland, crashed into a mountainside in Northern Scotland.
