Illustration by H. M. Bateman showing a blushing young woman regretting her decision to order a glass of milk in London s fashionable Cafe Royal because of the laughter and ridicule the request has generated, including that of her waiter. Bateman (1887-1970) was a popular artist and regularly contributed to the Sketch, the Tatler and the Bystander. His efficient, bold style depicting social faux-pas was ground breaking for its time and his work is a brilliant reflection of the period.
