Historic engraving showing two members of the British Arctic Expedition of 1875-1876 checking the thermometers used at their Winter Quarters. In 1875 the British Admiralty sent Captain George Nares with two ships, HMS Alert and HMS Discovery, to make an attempt to reach the North Pole via Smith Sound. The attempt was unsuccessful, but a new furthest North record was set and the coasts of Greenland and Ellesmere Island charted. Scientific observations were taken by the crews of both ships; Discovery had winter quarters at Lady Franklin Bay, whilst Alert wintered 50 miles away at Floeberg Beach. This engraving is available as an unframed giclee print, box canvas print or framed print.
